Beyond the cover

This book is not entirely a recipe book, though every chapter includes a delicious chai recipe that you can make from home and is inspired by members of our multicultural bestea family. This book is not entirely a history book, though it interacts with multiple histories. It’s not entirely a self-help book, though it has a collection of ideas that might be helpful to you. I like to think of this book as a topography of meaning, a map of sorts displaying points of interest where you can make pit stops to refresh yourself as you navigate the hills and valleys of your own lived experiences.

Each chapter of this book invites you to slow down. To pause. To resist a hurried posture in a hustle-obsessed culture that can often prevent us from savoring the important things, like a cup of homemade chai. And if you haven’t already, my hope is that you, too, may begin a love affair with chai. I hope that these pages offer you a bit of solace amid your struggles, and peace in a world that can feel anything but peaceful, just as a steaming cup of chai smooths out the rough edges of your day.

So grab your cup.

    Unclench your jaw.

  Breathe in. Breathe out. Sip.

 Let’s go on a journey.

- CHAI GUY
  • TikTok
  • Instagram

Dubbed “the CEO of Chai” by Bon Appétit magazine, Kevin Wilson is an expert on all things chai. When Wilson was a teenager, his family in Sri Lanka applied for visas to come to the US, but his was the only visa approved. A world away from his country and so many of his loved ones, he stayed connected to his culture and family through chai.

In The Way of Chai, Wilson shares his popular chai recipes and introduces readers to the art of making chai as a spiritual practice. His meditations on the brewing process illuminate valuable life lessons on attunement, gratitude, and serving others. While a steaming cup of chai can’t solve everything, it can help us tap into the power of patience, clarity, and intention.

Kevin Wilson nurtures a growing community on TikTok and Instagram by using chai, the cherished drink of his Sri Lankan family, as a medium for storytelling. Wilson, a third-culture kid who has lived in or visited fifteen countries, currently lives in Berrien Springs, Michigan, with his wife, Elynn, and two fur-children, Phoebe and Leo.

LIVING THE DREAM

See that picture on the left? That’s my தாத்தா (“thaatha”) my grandfather. He’s hired by the British, working as a supervisor in a tea estate in the highlands of Sri Lanka. He was a kind, hard-working, Christian man, who was always looking out for the under-privileged. As a descendant of Tamil tea estate workers - arguably one of the most marginalized communities in the island - my family and I want to continue the legacy of my grandfather by creating spaces for marginalized communities around the world to thrive by providing inter-cultural education, entrepreneurship opportunities, and community development.

The first stage in this journey begins with buying the tea estate in that picture. There’s no better place to start doing this than in my home country of Sri Lanka.

So, bestea, when you have the book, you are not just a reader of a story. You become an investor in a dream.
